Margao, Oct 12 (UNI) Defending champion Dempo Sports club hung on to the first half lead to get better of Vasco Sports club 2-1 and snatched full points in the ONGC I-League Football championship match played at Nehru stadium Fatorda here today.
Roberto Mendes Silva in the 22nd minute and Renty Martin in the 27th minute scored for Dempo, while Ravshan Teshabnev reduced the margin in the 30th minute for Vasco.
Dempo, with today's win opened their account with three points from two outings, a win and loss While Vasco sports club remained on same, one points from two defeats and a draw.
Dempo got off to an aggressive start with forwards and midfielders constantly threatening Vasco for the first 15 minutes and came up with three splendid opportunities in the 8th, 12th and 13th minutes but forwards faltered at a crucial juncture.
Dempo made first good move as early as in the 8th minute of the first half initiated by Roberto mendes silva who sent a floating cross to Mboyo Iyomi whose header missed the mark.
Dempo got another chance to score in the 12th minute but Renty Martin's header failed to find the net from a pass from Anthony Pereira.
Local club Dempo were further frustrated in the 13th minute when Vasco goalkeeper Laximikant Kuttimani brought off a diving save off a header from Renty Martin.
Dempo shot into the lead in the 22nd minute through Roberto Mendes Silva, who headed in a pass received from Anthony Pereira to make it 1-0.
Dempo increased their lead in the 27th minute through Renty Martin. It was a good combined move initiated by Climax Lawrence, who switched on to Anthony Pereira, who in quick succession passed to Renty who shot into the net to make 2-0.
Vasco reduced the margin in the 30th minute of the first half through Uzbekistan forward Ravshan Teshabnev off a well measured pass received from Minino Fernandes to make it 2-1 at half time.
The second half did not witness much of action, though Dempo had couple of good oportunits to increased their lead. In the 64th minute Vasco defender Covan Lawrence brought off a fine goal line save off a shot taken by Iyomi Mboyo. Then in the 82nd minute substitute Cliffton Gonsalves, who came in place of Mboyo, unleashed a powerpacked shot which hit the goal post and rebounded to the play.
Dempo's defender Sameer Naik was today adjudged the man of the match for his fine performance.
