Bihar: Seven people drown in seperate incidents

Muzaffarpur/Saharsa, Oct 10: Altogether seven people drowned in separate incidents in Bihar during the past 24 hours, official sources on Friday, Oct 10 said.

Three children died when a boat, ferrying 20 people, overturned on the bank of Bagmati river at Hathhiyagaon ghat under Minapur police station in Muzaffarpur last night.

Police said the people had boarded the boat at Hathiya village after enjoying Dussehra festival. Suddenly the boat lost its balance and overturned following which three children drowned. The rest of the people swam to safety, police added.

The body of a child had been fished out while the other two children were still traceless. Divers had been pressed into service to locate the bodies. The victims belonged to Bhadaulia village.

In a separate incident, four people of a family, including a woman, drowned when a boat ferrying six people capsized midstream in Parsadhar river near Harahari village of Banwanithari block in Saharsa yesterday.

Subdivisional officer of Simribakhtiyarpur Radheshyam Sah said the boat got trapped in the high current of the river water and capsized.

Two children were saved from drowning. The bodies of the four victims were still missing. Divers had been pressed into service to trace the bodies.

The ill-fated boat was returning from Salkhua village, Mr Sah added.
