Puducherry, Oct 10: Puducherry Lt. Governor Govind Singh Gurjar said police force has to be imparted special training and group training to ensure better service by them.
Participating in the 'Police Raising day' function here, he exhorted the police to bring to book culprits and ensure that they were properly punished through the courts.
Police have a direct role in a democracy and their actions would affect people directly and indirectly.
A state could be evaluated by taking into consideration the functioning of it's police force, he added.
Regretting that there was not much change in the functioning of the police force even 60 years after Independence, Mr Gurjar said police should function in unison with the people to restore it's diminishing image.
Chief Minister V Vaithilingam said the adminsitration was allowing police to function freely. As a result, the number of crimes were coming down in the union territory.
Home Minsiter E Valsaraj,who took stock of the grievances of the police force assured the the government would strive to redress them, he added.
