Kendrapada, Oct 10 (UNI) A debt-ridden farmer committed suicide by consuming pesticide after he suffered huge losses in the recent flood in Coastal Orissa.
The deceased, identified as Nagamani Swain(47) of Hatia village under Manikunda Gram Panchayat under Marshaghai block, committed suicide on Tuesday.
This is the second incident of farmer suicide. On September 26, a 60-year debt ridden farmer Mali Behera(60) of Saharadia village, under Kujanga block in the district, had committed suicide after he suffered the loss of crops he had raised over five acres of land by availing loan from a local money lender.
The farmer had raised paddy on his 4 acres of land after obtaining loan to purchase seeds and fertilizers. But the recent flood in the Mahanadi river system, dashed all his hopes to repay the debt amount to the money lender.
Family members said Nagmani on last Tuesday went to his field to see the crop and to his dismay found that the crops had been completely washed away by the flood water. He returned home and committed suicide by consuming poison.
The farmer was rushed to the District Headquarters hospital at Kendrapara where he died.
