Adilabad, Andhra Pradesh, Oct 10 (UNI) Police fired in the air to disperse two clashing groups during a religious procession at Bhainsa town, about 40 kms from here, today.
Prohibitory orders were clamped after four policemen, including a Sub-Inspector, were injured in stone pelting, police said.
Trouble started when members of a religious community started pelting stones at an immersion procession, which was passing a place of worship in the communally-sensitive village. Stones were pelted at the place of worship too.
Police resorted to lathicharge and opened fire in the air to quell the mob.
Additional police forces were called in from the district headquarters as the situation grew worse, the police said, adding that they were keeping a close watch on the situation in the village.
No one had been arrested so far, police said. It was not clear how the religious procession was allowed to pass the place of worship in the village, where communal tension prevailed for more than a decade.
