Chandigarh, Oct 10 (UNI) The Chandigarh Football Association (CFA) has decided to introduce prize money football tournaments for college students.
In an informal chat with newspersons, Congress MLA Venod Sharma, who also heads the CFA, said ''with a view to providing incentives to the players and improve the standard of soccer at the college level, the CFA would be hosting a prize money tournament for Chandigarh colleges and engineering colleges/institutes.
A total prize money of Rs one lakh would be at stake,'' he said while watching the semi-final between Sacred Heart and Carmel Convent the Chandigarh Sub-Junior Girls Football Championship for Dr Kamesh Bhargava Memorial Trophy being conducted by the CFA at the Sector 17 Football Stadium here.
''We will slowly build the football base and promote this fascinating sports discipline from the grass root level.
The CFA is probably the only state unit of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) which organises tournaments in all age groups,'' Sharma and CFA secretary Rakesh Bakshi said.
To keep the CFA updated, Venod Sharma has donated a computer, a fax-copier-scanner machine and printer to the Chandigarh Football Association.
