State election office gears up for polls in J

Srinagar, Oct 9 (UNI) Even though the Election Commission of India (ECI) has yet to announce its final decision on holding general assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the state Election machinery has geared up to meet any deadline.

A 3-member ECI team, headed by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) N Gopalaswami during their two-day visit here held a series of meetings with the leaders of different national and regional political parties to know their views on the timing of holding the polls.

However, though the parties belonging to Kashmir division said the situation was not conducive for credible poll, they have announced that they are ready to participate in the process anytime.

The ECI team also met Governor N N Vohra, Chief secretary, DGP and other high officials.

But no announcement was made for holding the polls in the state.

Meanwhile, the State election machinery has speeded up its work to meet any deadline for the polls.

The District Election Officer (DEO), Srinagar, has asked all the voters of Habba Kadal, Amira Kadal, Sonawar and Batmaloo constituencies, who have received Elector's Photo Identity Card (EPICs) forms to deposit these in the office of Election Naib Tehsildar, Municipal Corporation at Karan Nagar Srinagar within three days.

Similarly voters of Hazratbal, Zadibal, Eidgah and Khanyar constituencies, who have not returned the forms shall deposit these forms in the office of Assistant Commissioner (Revenue) Tankipora Srinagar within three days, an official spokesperson said today.
