New Delhi, Oct 9 (UNI) Senior journalist Umesh Lakhanpal, who died of heart attack yesterday, was cremated here today.
The body of Lakhanpal, the Chief reporter with the 'Punjab Kesri' newspaper, was consigned to flames by his brother Deshraj at the Shalimar Bagh cremation ground.
Present on the occasion to pay their tribute to the veteran scribe were a host of personalities from the Delhi political scene including Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, senior BJP leader and the party's chief ministerial candidate Vijay Kumar Malhotra, MPs Sajjan Kumar, Sandeep Dikshit, DPCC chief J P Agarwal, Delhi BJP chief Harshvardhan, Ministers in the Delhi Cabinet Mangat Ram Singhal, Aravinder Singh Lovely and Raj Kumar Chauhan, Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Legislative Assembly Jagdish Mukhi, Delhi Mayor Arti Mehra, chairman of the MCD standing committee Vijender Gupta, former DPCC presidents Rambabu Sharma and Subhash Chopra, several MLAs, councillors and journalists.
A condolence meeting in the memory of Lakhanpal will be held in the Press club of India on October 11 at 1530 hours.
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has announced Rs one lakh as ex-gratia to the family of Lakhanpal.
