Major fire breaks out in godown of Logistics company

Chennai, Oct 9 (UNI) A major fire broke out in the godown of a private Logistics company at Andalkuppam in suburban Manali in the adjoining Tiruvallur district this evening.

Police and Fire service personnel said paper bales,table fans and rubber sheets dumped in the godown were reduced to ashes.

There were no casualty as the godown belonging to the Universal Logistics India Private Limited was closed for the day for Ayudha Pooja.

A thick smoke engulfed the area as more than 100 fire service personnel headed by Deputy Director Jayakanthan battled hard for nearly five hours and arrested the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings, where a storage tank of an oil refinery was situated.

''We have arrested the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings.

But it will take time to arrest the heat. We are constantly spraying water'', a fire service personnel involved in the operation, said.

More than 15 firefighting units were involved in putting out the fire. Metro water tankers were also pressed into service.

Tiruvallur District Collector Dr Rajendra Kumar rushed to the spot and supervised the relief operations. He also passed necessary instructions to the firemen to put out the fire at the earliest.

The exact cause of the fire and the extent of damage were being assessed.
