Kanshiram neglected by Indian polity: Mayawati

Lucknow, Oct 9: Announcing a slew of developmental projects on the occasion of second death anniversary of Bahujan Samaj Party ideologue Kanshiram, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on castigated the Congress party at the Centre for not conferring 'Bharat Ratna' on him.

Lambasting the Congress and other opposition parties, she said it was unfortunate that the achievements of Kanshiram towards upliftment of the Dalits and exploited classess had been underrated by them. ''How can any one ignore his efforts through which he managed to empower the most neglected classes of the society,'' she fumed.

''Whatever he has done for the welfare of have-nots would go down in the history of this country in times to come,''Ms Mayawati said, adding, ''No party either at the Centre or otherwise has ever bothered to mourn his death anniversary or even paying a ritual condolence.'' It was her government which took the initiative to respect the achievements of the BSP ideologue by declaring public holiday on his Jayanti, she reminded. ''The society owed a lot to the great deeds done by Manyawar Kanshiram,'' the UP CM said.

Ms Mayawati said the launching of Kanshiram Housing Scheme for the SC, ST and other weaker sections was just a tribute to the great leader.

She said it was blessings of Kanshiram that she could become chief minister of Uttar Pradesh four times and moreover the weaker, neglected and backward classess should feel indebted to give them a sense of security and recognition in the country.

Ms Mayawati announced commissioning, laying foundation stone undertaking of 158 developmental projects amounting to Rs 3000 crore. Of these she dedicated to the people 17 bridges at the cost of Rs 49 crore, laid foundation stone of 46 bridges amounting Rs 182 crore and starting of road renovation works of Rs 751 crore.

The UP CM, in the presence of all her Cabinet colleagues dedicated the projects by pressing the remote button at her official residence this morning.

The third volume of the book ' A travelogue of my struggle-ridden life and BSP movement' authored by Ms Mayawati was also released on the occasion. The first two Hindi volumes of the book were released by Kanshiram in New Delhi on January 15,2006 on 50th birthday of the UP CM.
