Chennai, Oct 9 (UNI) Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK General secretary J Jayalalithaa today urged the Centre to mobilise necessary relief materials for the Sri Lankan Tamil people suffering without food, clothing, shelter and medicines.
In a statement here she said ''on behalf of the AIADMK party and as a representative of the people of Tamil Nadu, I urge the Centre to mobilise relief materials and send the same to the suffering Tamils in the island.'' She said in the ongoing conflict in Sri Lanka, thousands of innocent civilian Tamils have been displaced and rendered homeless.
They are living as refugees in their own homeland, she added.
The Tamils in Sri Lanka were struggling without food, medicines and shelter. Women and children were forced to bear the brunt of these problems. This situation has been in existence for several months now, she said.
Referring to Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's appeal to people to flood the Prime Minister's office with telegrams to pressurise him to save the Tamils, Ms Jayalalithaa said ''sending telegrams or reprimanding a low-level official of the High Commission is of no use to these suffering people.'' ''Should not the persons in power at the Centre and the State have at least an iota of concern for these suffering Tamils?'', she asked.
