Though a formal notification was not issued by the Sports Ministry, PCB officials were on Tuesday, Oct 7 informed by the authorities that Zardari has appointed Butt as the new PCB chief. ''Yes, Ijaz Butt is the new PCB chief. The sports ministry has informed the board about the appointment by President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari,'' PCB media director Mansoor Suhail told 'Daily Times'. Butt's appointment ended weeks of suspense since the resignation of former PCB chairman Nasim Ashraf who quit on August 18, a few hours after former President General Pervez Musharraf stood down to avoid impeachment.

The 70-year-old Butt, who has been one of Ashraf's strongest critics, is a member of the PCB's governing body. He earlier served as the secretary of the then Board of Control for Cricket in Pakistan (BCCP) between 1984 and 1988. The former batsman-wicketkeeper was also the president of the Lahore City Cricket Association for many years. He toured Australia in 1982-83 as manager of the Pakistan team and twice headed the national selection committee.
