Panaji, Oct 8 (UNI) Goa's Movement Against SEZs (GMAS) has strongly criticised Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Kamal Nath for attempting to rehabilitate three notified SEZ developers in the state.
GMAS Convenor Matanhy Saldanha, in a release issued here yesterday, welcomed the decision of the Tata to quit Singur, in spite of heavy investment and stated that Tata has shown respect to the will of the people against the Nano project in Singur.
He called upon promoters of the three notified projects to take a cue from Mr Ratan Tata and quit the state.
Mr Saldana, the former state Tourism Minister, said the demand of the SEZ developers for alternate land for alternate projects in Goa, exposed their intention to grab land in the state.
''GMAS wanted to reiterate that it does not want the developers of the three notified SEZ in Goa to take up any projects in the state in any form, and urge the state government not to fall prey to the mechanisms of the land sharks. The three notified SEZs are illegal at all levels and any investment made by the developers is no concern of the people of Goa, who have not yet forgiven them for the wrecked havoc upon the environment and ecology in the respective areas,'' he said.
He said the Union Government as well as the state government was dragging the issue, for almost one year, after the decision was taken by the state government and Mr Nath's assurance that SEZs would not be imposed on Goa.
He said irrespective of whether there are provisions or not to denotify the three notified SEZs at the Union Government level, the people of Goa will not accept SEZs in the present or any alternate forms and demanded that the government should denotify the same without any further delay.
Chief Minister Digamber Kamat's stand to oppose SEZs in Goa was right, as the same are opposed not only by the citizens but also by all political parties, NGOs and the government itself.
In order to clear all the doubts and mistrusts, Goa government should immediately cancel the SEZ policy for the state, he demanded.
