Dharamsala, Oct 7 (UNI) Arrangements have been made for the conduct of a six-day Paragliding Pre World Cup from October 15 at Bir-Billing in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh.
Tourism Commissioner-cum-secretary Manisha Nanda presided a high level meeting held at Bir to finalise arrangements, including security of paragliders. The site has been inspected by officers of concerned departments.
She said that more than 120 pilots had applied for their participation in the event but only 85 to 90 would be allowed to take part in view of the carrying capacity of the area.
This year Paragliding Pre World Cup has been approved by the Aero Club of India and the event granted category II status by Federation Aviation International (FAI) in international ranking.
The event would be held in association with the Paragliding World Cup Association (PWCA) according to its guidelines and those of the Aero Club of India (ACI), the national sports body.
Nanda said that interestingly the number of women pilots from India and abroad, who would participate in the event, had gone upto 15. The prize money this year has been increased from Rs 50,000 to Rs one lakh.
Bir-Billing site is regarded as the best in the world for paragliding. She said that Billing offered opportunity for high altitude and cross country flying for more than 200 Kms. The world record for out and return paragliding was set at Bir-Billing by Frenchman Xavior Redmond when he flew 132.5 Kms.
Nanda said that the success and experience of the past years made Himachal a strong contender for hosting the Paragliding World Cup in the future.
The closing ceremony would be held on October 20 in which Chief Minister would give prizes to the winners.
