Srinagar, Oct 7 (UNI) A self-styled batallion commander of Harkat-ul - Mujahideen (HuM) was killed while a militant was arrested along with a live hand grenade in the Kashmir valley overnight, official sources said.
Security forces and Special Operation Group (SOG) of the state police launched a joint operation at Seer Jagir, Sopore, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir last evening following a tip off about the presence of militants in a house, they said.
As the security forces were about to storm the house, they came under heavy fire from militants inside, ensuing a fierce encounter.
Sources said a HuM commander Wahab alias Ali Khubaeb was killed.
One AK rifle and other arms and ammunition were recovered from the slain militant, who was involved in a number of militancy related incidents.
Security forces also arrested a militant in possession with a live grenade, one AK magzine and some rounds at Baramulla.
