Srinagar, Oct 7 (UNI) The Majlis Shoura of breakaway Hurriyat Conference (HC) has appointed Ghulam Nabi Sumbji as acting chairman of the amalgam because of ill-health of chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who is being shifted to Delhi for treatment.
A spokesman of the HC said here today that the members of Majlis Shoura, the highest decision-taking taken body of the amalgam, who had come to enquire about the health of Mr Geelani, uninamously decided to appoint Mr Sumbji as the acting chairman.
He will function as acting chairman of the HC in the absence of Mr Geelani, who has been advised by the doctors here for replacement of pace - maker.
Spokesman said the condition of Mr Geelani deteriorated because of continuous detention and house arrest. He was admitted to hospital here on October 5.
However, the doctors have now advised him to undergo surgery for replacement of pace - maker in Escorts hospital at Delhi.
Spokesman said Mr Geelani will be leaving for Delhi for the operation.
However, in a message to people in Kashmir, Mr Geelani stressed the need for unity among all separatist groups.
He appealed to them to follow the programmes of the Coordination Committee (CC), spearheading the present agitation in Kashmir.
Mr Geelani criticised the authorities for imposing curfew in the valley and arresting separatist leaders.
He also asked the people not to give any heed to rumours and foil any attempts by miscreants to cause any harm to unity.
