New Delhi, Oct 7 (UNI) Sourav Ganguly wanted to play the tests series against Australia without any pressure before announcing his retirement.
Disclosing this chairman of the selection comittee K Srikkanth said Sourav was of the view that ''every now and then the axe was on him.'' According to the chief selector, Sourav talked to him and another selector and said,'Chika'(Srikkanth's nickname) let me play without any pressure on me.
''I pray he scores a lot of runs in the series and India wins.
A guy like Sourav Ganguly deserves it because he has done a lot for this country,'' Srikkanth, who is also a former skipper added.
Meanwhile, two other former skippers Bishan Singh Bedi and Kapil Dev today welcomed Ganguly's decision to retire.
However, Bedi hoped that Saurav did not announce his decision under pressure.
''Sourav's contribution has been enormous. A great Indian cricketer, a legend has hung up his boots. I hope he has done it on his own terms,'' Bedi said.
Bedi was of the view that Sourav's decision to retire calls for celerbration because ''he (Sourav) deserves a grand farewell.'' Kapil Dev, while welcoming Ganguly's decision to quit the game said nobody should put pressure on senior players to retire.
Why there is no talk about retirement of the board officials, why they don't quit on their own Kapil Dev said adding ''Nobody talks about retirement of the Board officials but they only put pressure on seniors, who are great players and should leave on their own.'' ''Nobody but the players themselves should decide when to go,'' he added.
