Visakhapatnam, Oct 6 (UNI) Visakhapatnam Port has emerged as the leader among the major ports in handling cargo during the 2001-07, Visakhapatnam Port Trust(VPT) Chairman in-charge M S Rao said today.
Addressing a media conference here, he said the port will celebrate the formation day and platinum jubilee tomorrow.
He said the port handled a record traffic of 64.6 million tonnes with an incremental traffic of 8.21 million tonnes, the highest ever in a single year. The Port Railway handled traffic of 35.6 million tonnes which was the highest among the major ports in the country.
The estimated cost of developmental projects for the port during the XIth Plan period of 2007-2012 is around 3,000 crore, including private sector investments of 50 per cent, he said.
The Japanese Bank for International Cooperation has sanctioned a loan of Rs 200 crore for the project to be implemented by 2012, he added.
