New Delhi, Oct 6 (UNI) Six-month-old Sivojit has become the youngest baby to undergo a successful liver transplant which saved his life following a fatal liver ailment.
Sivojit was referred to the Apollo Hospital here at six months of age as he was born with a fatal liver condition called Biliary atresia.
Earlier, a KASAI operation was performed to join his liver to the intestines at Kolkata. However, post surgery his condition deteriorated and he became very sick with rising bilirubin and convulsions.
Sivojit was then referred to the Indraprastha Apollo Hospital which has a very successful liver transplant programme. His operation was considered risky as his bilirubin level was very high and blood vessels were very tiny because of his age.
The doctors were faced with a major dilemma but as time was running out, Dr Subhash Gupta, Senior Consultant, Liver Transplant decided to go for a transplant. Both the parents were ready to donate part of their liver for this operation. The father was found to be more suitable on testing.
Sivojit recently underwent a successful liver transplant with the IVC used to reperfuse the liver. He is now doing well and hopefully can look forward to leading a normal life in the future.
