Gadar Movement hero stages protest at Jallianwala Bagh
Amritsar, Oct 6 (UNI) Anguished over attempts being made to destroy the traditional look of the Jallianwala Bagh, veteran freedom fighter Baba Bhagat Singh Bilga today staged a protest in front of this historic monument associated with the freedom struggle.
The protest was organised by members of the Desh Bhagat Yadgaar Committee headed by Baba Bilga, the 101 year-old hero of the historic "Gadar Movement".
In a memorandum addressed to the Prime Minister and handed over to the Deputy Commissioner, Baba Bilga called for halting the on-going construction (destruction) work of the historic place.
"It is our earnest request to the Prime Minister to prevent the defacement of a place which is still carrying the memories of those who had given their lives for the good of the nation" Baba Bilga said in the memorandum while refering to the construction work being carried out to widen the entry point to the Jallianwala Bagh, through which Brig Gen R E H Dyer's troops had marched into the Bagh on April 13, 1919 and opened fire on a peaceful gathering.
Baba Bilga said in the memorandum that in the name of propogating tourism, the originality of important historic monuments associated with the freedom struggle were being destroyed.
