Aizawl, Oct 5 (UNI) The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is organising the first ever football tournament in Mizoram, with the BSNL Cup reaching its climax as the group match will complete tomorrow.
Out of the eight teams participating in the highest-cash-prize tourney in the history of Mizoram, the Ist Mizoram Armed Police has reached the semis.
Each of the remaining seven teams had also chances to kick its way into the semis, organisers said.
Jointly organised with the Mizoram Football Association (MFA), the football tournament offers a cash award of Rs one lakh for the winner plus a trophy and medals.
''Mizoram has a huge potential in sports, particularly football.
The BSNL Cup is our initiative towards exploring football talents among the Mizo youths. We have offered this high amount of cash prizes to encourage the aspiring young footballers,'' BSNL deputy General Manager Lalhmachhuana told UNI here today.
He added it was being organised under the company's marketing fund.
Kickstarting the football tournament few days back, Mizoram Governor M M Lakhera lauded the BSNL's initiative and urged that let it be a trendsetter for other corporates.
According to the organisers, the presence of eight foreign footballers from Nigeria, Liberia and Myanmar has contributed a lot to the success of the tournament.
''Participation of foreign players is a new chapter in Mizoram football. The foreign players have drawn huge spectators,'' sports journalist Mamuana informed.
The organisations also extended gratitude to the Assam Rifles authorities for cancelling their programmes for paving way for the tournament held at the AR Ground, the largest in the city.
