Puducherry, Oct 4: The centuary-old central prison building constructed by the French here was today vacated with the prisoners being shifted to the new central prison at Kalapet near here.
The central prison, situated in the busy Nehru street was causing traffic congestion and lack of space was also a concern as more prisoners could not be accomodated. To overcome this problem, the new prison was constructed at a cost of Rs 12 crore in a 35 acre site. It was inaugurated by former Chief Minster N Rangasamy on August 20. The prison complex has all facilities for prisoners, including seperate areas for yoga and meditation. The quarters for the jail staff is to be constructed at a cost of Rs 15 crore.
About 300 prisoners, both convicts and under trials were being shifted in batches to the new compex today.
