Beed, Oct 4 (UNI) Maharashtra Revenue Minister Narayan Rane today stressed that the government will take special measures for the development of Marathwada region.

Addressing a public meeting after performing the 'bhumipujan' of the building for collector's office here, Mr Rane said after 61 years of independence and 50 years of formation of the state, socio-economic ills like poverty and malnurition continue to exist.

''We are talking about being 'supreme power', but looking at America's GDP which is Rs 19 lakh, while Maharashtra's is Rs 43,000 and Beed's Rs 26,000, how is it possible?'' he wondered.

Mr Rane criticised the leaders of Opposition parties for giving false promises to the people ahead of the general and state elections due next year.

He said they too were in power at the Centre and the state, but what did they do? he asked.

The Minister said the administration will do everything to give justice to the common people and added that his department will be pro-public.

Terming PWD Minister Chhagan Bhujbal's step to withdraw case against Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray as 'good', he said such things should be followed by everyone.

''I am touring the state as per instructions from the high command and don't know what other ministers are doing,'' Mr Rane said without naming anyone.

Health Minister Dr Vimal Mundada and MLC Suresh Nawle were also present on the occasion.
