Bhubaneswar, Oct 3 : Thirty-nine days after a nun was allegedly raped during the Kandhamal riots in Orissa, the crime branch took charge of investigating the case today.
The step was taken following the medical report collected by the Orissa Police from hospital on Thursday.
According to reports, "The crime branch of state police under the direct supervision of Inspector General of Police (Crime) will conduct the investigation."
Four persons were arrested and Inspector in-charge of Baliguda police station, K N Rao was suspended with immediate effect for not acting promptly on the complaint, as the medical report stated possibility of rape.
The four arrested persons are being interrogated and they will also undergo medical examination.
Kandhamal Superintendent of Police Praveen Kumar said, "The woman was medically examined and the report received by us suggests possibility of rape."
According to the report of the nun's medical examination, there was no external or internal vaginal injury, but semen was found inside.
The nun's clothes have been sent for tests to the state forensic laboratory.
On questions of attempt to suppress the matter, a senior police officer said, "It is a fact that the nun concerned and Pastor Thomas Chellam were assaulted by a mob. But allegation of rape had not been confirmed all these days."
According to reports though the nun had denied the rape allegation during recording of her statement, she later gave a written complaint alleging that one person from among the mob raped her.
Subsequently a rape case was also registered.
Initially the Orissa Police had claimed that they had rescued the priest and the nun from the mob.
Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil today sent a letter to Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on continuing violence in the state.
