Former Vadodara captain Martin to lead Assam in Ranji

By Staff

Vadodara, Oct 3 (UNI) Former Vadodara Ranji captain Jacob Martin, who once decided to hang on his boots in November last year, has joined Assam Cricket Association (ACA) to lead its senior team in the forthcoming Ranji season.

Talking to UNI here today, the 36-year-old stylish middle-order batsman said he would be playing for Assam in the Ranji Plate Group League matches as a guest player and do his best to develop the game in that state.

Stating that Assam have strengthened its Ranji squad by inducting two other guest players from Orissa and Karnataka, the former international, who has been offered the captainship, said he was looking forward to see Assam through to the Ranji Super League with exemplary performance.

Martin has been the most successful skipper and highest run-getter in first class cricket for Vadodara, having taken the side to the semi-finals on four occasions and won the coveted trophy in 2000-01 out of Vadodara's two appearances in the final.

After leading Vadodara in their Ranji semi-finals against Mumbai in his last first class match in January last year, Martin had announced his retirement when BCA selection committee dropped him from the Ranji squad for 2007-08 season on a controversial fitness ground following his rift with the then coach Ashok Mankad.

Although the BCA management persuaded him not to retire from first class cricket, Martin who played 17 long years for Vadodara and led the side for seven years, did not play in the West Zone Ranji one-day tournament as a result of which he was kept out of the Ranji team last year.
