Vadodara, Oct 2 (UNI) Eight people were killed and 12 others injured critically when their speeding jeep collided head-on with an oncoming truck at Madhvas on the Kalol-Halol road in Panchmahal district of Gujarat early today.
The accident occurred when the occupants of the jeep, belonging to Bagidora in Rajasthan, were on their way to the famous Mahakali temple atop the Pavagadh hills near Halol.
The injured were first rushed to the Halol hospital and then referred to the SSG Civil hospital here, where two of them succumbed to their injuries.
The condition of the injured, including four women and a child, was stated to be very serious, hospital sources said.
According to Kalol police sources, six of the victims, including two women, died on the spot, while others seriously injured as the truck ploughed into the jeep, ferrying 20 passengers to the holy place on the occasion of Navratri.
The accident reportedly happened at around 0400 hrs.
The driver and the cleaner of the truck fled, abandoning the vehicle on the scene.
