Low and slow Indian pitches to suit me, asserts Jacques

By Staff

Melbourne, Oct 2 (UNI) With a modest home series against India earlier this year, Australian opener Phil Jacques wants to make a big turnaround this time and said the slow and low decks here would suit his style and provide his team with the springboard it needs to conquer the subcontinent.

Nicknamed ''the Pro'' because of his attention to detail, Jacques averaged 34.71 against India in the home series this year, although it would have been more prosperous if he would have managed to built on the three half-centuries that he got.

''I had never played against those guys (India) before. It was good to get some experience against them,'' Jacques was quoted as saying by Herald Sun today.

''Obviously they know their conditions very well over here but I am really excited. I do know their general shapes (of deliveries) and what they do. It's just a matter of getting used to the conditions here,'' he added.

However, Jacques will not only have to compete against the Indians but with Simon Katich as well who has a fair experience of playing here in sub-continent and is pressing hard for a place in the side with his recent performances.

Jacques did not play against the Rajasthan Cricket Academy at the weekend because of a stiff back.

The New South Wales left-hander hopes that he would secure a place in the playing XI for the opening Test at Bangalore and asserted that he was able to adjust to the Indian conditions last month when he toured with Australia A.

Jacques said years of playing on a spin-friendly SCG deck and his time in English county cricket had prepared him well.

''I have also had a season with Northamptonshire where we had really big-spinning wickets that didn't bounce either, which are very similar to what we've found so far.

''I think they suit my game. I am also really looking forward to the crowds. They are so enthusiastic and energetic and so excited about cricket. It's great to be out there,'' Jacques stated.
