Jalandhar Oct 2 (UNI) Anguished over attempts being made to destroy the traditional look of the historic Jallianwala Bagh at Amritsar, veteran freedom fighter Baba Bhagat Singh Bilga today appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to intervene and halt the ongoing construction work of the historic place.
''It is our earnest request to the Prime Minister to prevent the defacement of a place which is still carrying the memories of those who had given their lives for the good of the nation,'' Baba Bilga, the 101 year-old hero of the historic ''Gadar Movement'' said while referring to the construction work being carried out to widen the entry point to the Jallianwala Bagh, through which Brig Gen R E H Dyer's troops had marched into the Bagh on April 13, 1919 and opened fire on a peaceful gathering.
The Desh Bhagat Yadgaar Committee which Baba Bilga heads has decided to write a letter to UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and members of Jallianwala Bagh Memorial National Trust to intervene in this matter.
Baba Bilga said the committee would hold a protest march and a 'dharna' on October 6, in front of the Bagh to awaken the government.
