Expo on beneficial reptiles
Tiruchirapalli, Oct 2 (UNI) A three-day exhibition on benificial reptiles commenced here today.
It is organised by the the city-based Barn Owl Nature Club (BONC) to commemorate the 'WILD LIFE WEEK 2008.' BONC Director B Venkataramani said the main aim of the exhibition was to create awareness about the richness and the diversity of nature and need to conserve the environment and the habitat.
Dr Venkataramani,who was Former Head,Analytical Chemistry Division of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai also pointed out this was the tenth Thematic Exhibition of BONC and the second exhibition being organised by BONC here.
He also pointed out the reptiles were the first truly land vertebrates evolved from amphibians and had given rise to birds and mammals.
They differed from amphibians with their scaly skins and shelled eggs. All were cold-blooded animals that could thrive equally well on water (sea and fresh), land and swamps among others.
The objective of the exhibition was to bring awareness to the public so that common man could appreciate the usefulness of these animals, he added.
He said though large amount of interesting and fascinating information was available, only information which had immediate appeal was presented in the exhibition.
