3 policemen injured as hawkers resort to violence
Midnapore, Oct 2 (UNI) At least three police personnel were injured when an irate mob, comprising local hawkers, threw stones at various government establishments, including banks, and set ablaze two police vehicles in front of the SP's residence here this morning.
West Midnapore District Superintendent of Police Rajesh Singh said the mob was protesting against removal of hawkers from busy streets and government establishments in the town.
The mob also torched some shops in front of the SP's residence and the Central Bus stand.
Ten people have been arrested so far in this connection, the SP added.
Earlier, the local municipality, after discussions with the district administration, had requested the hawkers to remove the roadside shops.
Meanwhile, the situation continued to be tense in the entire town and large contingents of police and the RAF were patrolling the vulnerable areas in the town.
The district administration had also asked for reinforcement of additional police forces from the state, the SP said.
