Mumbai, Oct 1 (UNI) Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) Thane district leader Sudhir Ranade today alleged that the attack on the Navratri mandal at Rabodi in Thane district and Murud Janzira in Raigad were pre-planned by the minority community and urged for the culprits to be booked as early as possible.
Dr Ranade told newspersons here that the trouble arose at around 2130 hrs on September 29 over erecting the arch of a Navratri mandal. He further alleged that 39 police personnel were injured in the attack and several shops of majority community were set on fire.
He said the attackers were not from Rabodi area. In the incident, one person was killed and more than 50 others were injured.
President of the Navratri Mandal, Advocate Ratanprabha Patil said last year some leaders of the minority community, especially youth, came and told them to remove saffron coloured flag. Later, the issue was resolved. But, this time they had pre-planned the attack and forced the mandal to remove the flag and arch, which then resulted in rioting and arson in the area.
She said a group of people from minority community resorted to heavy stone pelting and targeted the houses in the locality. This was followed by a clash and arson, in which a number of houses were torched and even vehicles were not spared.
Police arrived on the scene and made an unsuccessful attempt to quell the rioters. But the policemen were also targeted, with several of them being injured in the incident.
Among the injured, were three journalists and two members of the home guards, she added.
