Punjab steps up vigil to check liquor smuggling from UT

Mohali, Oct 1 (UNI) The Punjab Police has stepped up vigil along its borders with the Union Territory of Chandigarh to check smuggling of liquor.

This drive has yielded positive results as the local police has in the first eight months of this year seized around 1.44 ML liquor that is around 19.222 bottles. The liquor is normally smuggled from the UT where it is cheaper than in Punjab.

Giving details of the last two seizures, SP (detective) R K Bakshi said that 725 cases were seized from a car near Sector-71 last night. The lone occupant of the car, identified as Kamaljit Singh of Bassi Pathana was taken into custody and later booked under the Excise Act.

Refering to the labels on the cases, Mr Bakshi said that the Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) was meant for sale only in Chandigarh.

Likewise in another case the police seized 17 cases of IMFL meant for sale in Chandigarh, besides 36 bottles of country made liquor from a car near Mullapur barrier this morning. Thw two occupants of the car identified as Mandeep Singh and Amardeep Singh were taken into custody and booked under the Excise Act.
