Four days, 3.25 lakh passengers later, BMTC is riding high on the success of the promotional campaign that aimed at getting more people to use the luxury public transport service.

Cashing in on the popularity of the big red bus, transport minister R Ashok on Monday, Sep 29 announced that Volvo bus fares would be slashed on Sundays and on government holidays. On all routes except to Bangalore International Airport, fares will be at a minimum of Rs 5, and a maximum of Rs 20. These fares would be applicable on a total of 83 days in a year and have been introduced after a city-wide survey, 'on popular demand,' said Ashok. BMTC operates 140 Vayu Vajras in the city.

The fares have been slashed under various slabs, resulting in a reduction in per kilometre fare from Rs 1.26 to Rs 0.72 on Sundays and holidays. Where fares were earlier Rs 10, the slashed fares are Rs 5 and where the fares were as high as Rs 45, the special fares will be Rs 20, a reduction of 56%. The reduced fares are Rs 5, Rs 8, Rs 10, Rs 12, Rs 13, Rs 15, Rs 16, Rs 18 and Rs 20, under various slabs.
