Manipur: Mera Chaoren Houba festival begins

Imphal, Sep 30: Mera Chaoren Houba, the festival of unity and oneness, began today in the state.

People belonging to different communities observed the day by greeting each other and organising processions.

Hundreds gathered to offer prayers at the Sanamah temple at Hayingkhongbal here.

The day also marks the commencement of a month-long festival in Manipur bringing the people belonging to different communities together.

Governor Gurbhachan Jagat also greeted the denizens on the occasion.

The traditional festival of Mera Chaoren Houba is celebrated in Manipur on the advent of Mera-Tha (month of September/October) every year in a bid to preserve and promote unity among all sections of the society.

The festivity aims at fostering the age-old co-existence of pluralistic society of Manipur.
