Suicide among Indians on the rise in the UAE
Dubai, Sep 29 (UNI) An Indian labourer allegedly committed suicide hanging himself in Habab, a small town in Fujairah.
The labourer was found by his colleagues as they reported to work on Saturday at 0600 hrs at an under construction factory site.
Colleagues told police the deceased was last seen as he left the on-site housing complex at midnight and was not seen until he was found dead six hours later, Gulf News said.
The number of suicides by Indians in the UAE has been rising since 2003 thanks to the high cost of living and the resultant financial pressure particularly for the low income workers.
Indians commit suicides unable to clear the debts back home.
As many as 92 Indians committed suicide in Dubai and the Northern Emirates so far this year, according to an official of the Indian Consulate in Dubai.
The statistics available in the Consulate reveal that 109 Indians in these Emirates took the extreme step in 2006 and 118 in 2007.
The number of suicides by Indians, in fact, has been rising steadily from 40 in 2003, 70 in 2004 and 84 in 2005.
