Madhubani, Sep 29 (UNI) Railway Minister Lalu Prasad today said the Railways had earned profit of Rs 79,000 crores during the past four years without increasing the passengers' fare and freight charge.
After flagging off Jainagar- Nizamuddin Garibrath express at Jainagar railway station, Mr Prasad said the wonderful performance of Indian Railways assumed significance following the global recession.
'' The internationally acclaimed private and public sector undertakings are surprised over the huge profits earned by the Railways despite worldwide recession,'' he said and added that even top management gurus were interested to know the mysteries behind the miracle of the Indian Railways.
Stressing the need for spreading the light of knowledge and wisdom in females, Mr Prasad said the Railways had decided to provide ''free pass'' to girl students for travelling to attend the classes up to graduation level.
The Railway Minister said the extension of railway tracks would be made to introduce the train services between Jainagar and Kathmandu to enable the better communication facilities between the citizens of India and Nepal.
Mr Prasad said the UPA government had waived off debts to farmers which helped in preventing the incidents of suicide by them in various parts of the country.
Similarly, the Railways had provided succour to the flood victims in remote areas where state government machineries failed to rush the reliefs.
