Guwahati, Sep 28 (UNI) Local girl Kalpana Choudhury won the gold medal in the Light Fly-weight category of Asian Women Boxing Championship being organised here, with the Indian girls dominating in the entire tournament.
Out of the 13 finals being played here this evening, Indian girls figured in nine. However, they began on a disastrous note as World Champion Mary Kom went down to O K Jong of North Korea in a keenly contested match.
Mary was the clear favourite but North Korean girl played a clever game and picked up points forcing Mary to settle for a silver only.
However, during the second match of the day, Kalpana was too aggressive for her opponent Ngo Thi Phung of Vietnam.
Displaying a superb footwork, she landed a series of punch on the face of Vietnamese girl.
She went stronger and stronger in each round to win the match comfortably at 10-2 as well as the first gold for the host country.
Talking to newspersons after winning the gold, she dedicated the medal to her supporters.
