New York, Sept.27 : Republican vice-presidential candidate and Alaska Governor Sarah Palin startling answer to a question on how she saw Alaska's proximity to Russia as an example of her foreign policy experience, invoked the image of "a polar bear, jumping from rhetorical ice floe to ice floe, drifting some but eventually managing to get safely to dry land."

Only on this answer, Palin may have missed dry land, claims the Washington Post. According to the paper, "This nails-on-a-chalkboard response, and the speed with which it ricocheted in cyberspace," reminded it of another woman aspiring to a higher position -- 2007 Miss Teen South Carolina Lauren Caitlin seeking to become Miss Teen USA. The paper wryly commented: "Maybe it's a beauty queen thing. Palin was the second runner-up in the Miss Alaska pageant in 1984. Or maybe it's that the extremely popular governor of Alaska, who has excited the Republican Party base in ways that Sen. John McCain couldn't, is not prepared to be a heartbeat away from the presidency, let alone be vice president."
