Mysore, Sep 26 (UNI) The intention of the central and state governments to achieve total sanitation in every district by 2012 could be materialised only through providing good facility in every village and change of attitude of rural folk, opined A S Srikanth, Secretary, Department of rural development and Panchayath Raj.
Inaugurating the two day state level workshop on total sanitation campaign for CEOs Zilla Panchayath here at Abdul Nazir Sab Institute for rural development, he observed that sanitation was very bad in villages with no proper arrangements for disposal of liquid and solid wasters.
Stating that the government machinery should provide better sanitation facilities and create an awareness among the villagers to use the facilities.
He called upon non governmental organizations to extend help in accomplishing the mission and that top priority to be given for supply of drinking water, good sanitation and waste disposal. The attitude of the rural people should also be changed by creating awareness on food and hygiene. That could be achieved only through good communication and a door to door publicity campaign. The government, other than providing good sanitation facilities in villages, should insist on the presence of a toilet in every house before providing any government facility to rural people. The CEOs should strive to remove ignorance from the villagers and create an awareness on personal hygiene, he added.
