Kolkata, Sep 26 (UNI) East Bengal made a brilliant start in the ONGC I-League, drubbing local challenge and debutant United SC 3-1 at rainsoaked Vidyasagar Krinangan in Barasat tonight.
Red and Gold were leading 3-0 in first half and all goals came in a span of 20 mintues.
Surkumar Singh shot in, capitalising on an Edmilson's short pass the tenth mintue, giving East Bengal an early lead. Minutes before United SC survived a real threat when defender Snehashis Charkaborty had made a goaline save.
EB's second goal came ten minues later from newly recruit Yusuf Yakubu, a Ghanian, enjoying a reputation of goal scoring machine.
Yakubu following an aerial ball from Renedy Singh leaped above all United defenders to nod, defeating goalie Arindam Ghosh in the slippery ground.
India-International Sunil Chettri, who was picked up man-of-the match, scored East Bengal's third and final goal in the 28th minute, lathching on to a ball from Edmilson.
United SC, a debutant in the I-Leauge, came back a bit into the second half after Hardeep Singh Saini came in place of captain Lalmalswama Hamr. The team would face criticism for having no foreigner as they had in the local league.
In absence of foreign recruit Muritala Ali, United were rudderless on the front.
The consolation goal for United was scored by Sankar Oraon as his left footer completely beat Subrata Pal.
Oraon also made some forays in the end, exposing how East Bengal's deep defence lacked cohesion and Suleh Musha needed extra support in coming days.
