Nagpur, Sep 26 (UNI) Grand Master (GM) Nigel Short of the United Kingdom (UK) is the top seed followed by GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly of India for the Mayor's Cup Commonwealth Chess Championship that begins here tomorrow.
Speaking to reporters here yesterday, Organising Committee Chairman and Municipal Commissioner Aseem Gupta said that Short and Ganguly were among the 25 foreign players and 237 Indian players, who would participate in the tournament.
The participants included 15 GMs, two Woman Grand Masters (WGMs), 35 International Masters (IMs), eight Woman International Masters (WIMs) and 16 FIDE Masters (FIMs), he said.
There would be five foreign GMs and five foreign IMs, Mr Gupta said. Among the participants would be the first Canadian-born GM, the 54-year old Kevin Spraggett, he also said.
''Players from Australia, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Pakistan, South Africa, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Zambia were participating in the event,'' he said, adding, ''the tournament was being organised by Nagpur District Chess Association (NDCA) under the auspices of World Chess Federation (WCF) and Commonwealth Chess Association (CCA).
Mr Gupta said Maharashtra Minister for Sports Vasant Purke would formally inaugurate the championship tomorrow evening.
CCA President Ravindra Dongre and All India Chess Federation (AICF) Secretary D V Sundar would be the guests of honour.
''It would be a Swiss League 11-round tournament, with the rounds being played from September 28 to October six,'' he added.
