Guwahati, Sep 26 (UNI) The student unions of the Northeastern region today announced of spearheading a movement to ensure justice for Manipur weight lifter Monika Devi, who was dropped from the Beijing Olympics squad after allegedly being tested positive in a dope test.

The North East Students' Organisation (NESO) said here that a sustained campaign would be launched from next month with greater vigour after previous appeals for a CBI probe and punishment of those responsible for framing Monika Devi failed to yield results so far.

''Monika Devi's case had been a clear case of injustice and humiliation. It has hurt the sentiments of the people of the NE,'' NESO president Dr Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharyya said.

He informed that the issue was discussed during yesterday's executive meet of NESO and a sit-in demonstration would be staged in Guwahati on October 3 to highlight the case.

''At least two famous sports personalities of all the NE states would participate in the agitation,'' NESO assistant general secretary and Manipur Students Union president James Bond said.

He also urged the government for all-round development of sports facilities in NE.

''Sports infrastructure has been developed only in Manipur and Assam because of the National Games. Will the other NE states also have to host the Games to get even the minimum facilities?'' Mr Bond questioned.
