ONGC down Chandigarh to enter QF

Chandigarh, Sept 25 (UNI) Star-packed Oil and Natural Gas Corporation stormed into quarter-final of the 38th S N Vohra's All India Gurmit Memorial Hockey Tournament being organised by Rock Rovers at the Sector 42 Hockey Stadium here today.

ONGC, who got a bye into pre-quarter-final, ended the winning run of Chandigarh XI by 6-1. At Half time, the winners led 3-0. In-form Diwakar Ram scored three goals. Amarjeet, Sandeep Antil and Amit scored one goal each.

ONGC were awarded five penalty corners and they converted two.

ONGC also got a penalty stroke which was also converted by them.

Chandigarh XI forced two penalty corners but failed to utilise these opportunities. Chandigarh XI converted a penalty stroke through Rupinder Pal for their lone goal in the match.

ONGC earned first penalty corner in the 17the minute and penalty corner specialist Diwkar Ram banged home with a well-directed shot.

Amarjeet and Sandip Antil scored field goals in the 23rd and 29th minutes, respectively.

Against the run of play, Chandigarh XI were awarded a stroke which Rupinder Pal converted in the 44th minute. ONGC retaliated and in the next minute, Diwakar Ram converted his team's fifth penalty corner. Two minutes later, Diwakar Ram converted a penalty stroke.

Amit scored a field goal in the 64th minute to round of the winners' tally.

Electrical and Mechanical Engineers eked out a narrow 1-0 win over Central Industrial Security Force in a second round match. The all-important goal was scored by Akash who converted a penalty stroke in the 37th minute.

Earlier, Indian Air Force advanced to the next round by ousting Signals by 3-1. The airmen scored through Sanjay Yadav (8th and 12th) and Prabhakar (66th, penalty corner). For Signals, PK Varma redued the margin in the 62nd minute by converting a penalty corner.

Tomorrow's fixtures: PNB vs EME (2.45 p.m), Western Railways vs SCR Hyderbad (4.15 p.m.) and IAF vs IOC (5.45 p.m.).
