New Delhi, Sep 25 (UNI) Army Boys (Bangalore) edged out Govt Central HS School (Mizoram) 2-1 in a hardfought final to win the Subroto Cup 2008 Junior (U-17) title here today.
Both the teams were on the offensive right from the start but were let down by too many mispasses, specially in the final third.
Army Boys took the lead in the 11th minute when Tej Kumar Singh scored off a through pass from captain Jackichan Singh.
The Mizos hit back in the very next minute with Malsawmtluanga (12th min) firing the equaliser.
H Lalamuankima could have put the Mizoram team ahead in the 28th minute when he managed to evade the Army defenders and manuevered himself into a scoring position. But his shot was blocked at the near post by Army goalkeeper Biman Nandi.
Just a few minutes later, an unmarked Mizoram striker K Lalawmpuia found himself at the end of a through pass but his powerful shot was saved by an alert Nandi.
On the resulting counter-attack, a beautiful pass from Elvis Kipgen found Y Bobo Singh who slotted home. But the goal was ruled offside by the assistant referee.
Jackiechan (55th min), who was constantly troubling the Mizoram defence with his darting runs, scored the decider with a powerful freekick from 30 yards.
The best chance of the match for the Mizoram boys was created by Joseph Ramdinmawia who, after a speedy run down the left wing, found Lalawmpuia in front of the rival goal. But the dimunitive striker failed to find the target, shooting wide of the near post.
The Army team could have scored their third goal just seconds before the final whistle. Jackiechan, who was impressive with his superb skills and ball control, dribbled past a couple of defenders on the left. But he shot over the bar from close range with Laltanpuia completely beaten under the Mizoram bar.
Jackiechan was adjudged the best player of the tournament while Sankho of Orissa was named as the the most promising player.
The title of best coach went to Army Boys coach G Venu Gopal.
