Chennai, Sep 24 (UNI) With the Madras High Court having cleared the decks, actor and politician D Nepoleon, heading a faction of Tamil Nadu Basketball Assocition (TNBA), today took possession of the J J indoor Basketball stadium in the city and pledged to promote the sport earnestly.
Talking to newspersons at the stadium after taking posession, the actor-politician said the Executive and General Body would meet tomorrow to elect the new set of office bearers for the Association.
Mr Nepoleon, who is the Chairman of the Association said the Association has remained ''inactive'' for more than two decades when it was under the monopoly of former Tamil Nadu IAS officer, A N Dhyaneswaran.
Mr Dhyaneswaran had placed under suspension a number of players, office bearers and referees and ''the suspension stands revoked'' from today onwards, Mr Nepoleon said.
Charging Mr Dhyaneswaran of swindling funds belonging to the Association, he said his predecessor has to submitt accounts for the last 23 years, failing which, he would resort to legal action.
Mr Nepoleon claimed that the Basketball Federation of India (BFI) had accorded recognition to the Association under his chairmanship and agreed to allot national level tournaments to the association in the coming months.
He said out of 300 clubs in the state, more than 280 clubs have become members of the association. Only a handfull of about 14 clubs were with Mr Dhyaneswaran and they too expressed their willingness to join him.
To give a boost to the sport, the Association would adopt five villages in each of the 31 districts in the state and build basketball courts to harness the talent. ''We want to create atleast 1000 clubs in the state'', he said.
