Madurai, Tamil Nadu, Sep 24 (UNI) Unidentified miscreants attacked a place of worship in a prime locality here, damaging the glass case of "Virgin Mary" and a display board here today.

The attack on the place of worship was the first reported in Tamil Nadu, in the wake of a series of attacks on places of worship and prayer halls in Orissa and Karnataka.

The mischief mongers pelted stones from outside the place of worship, situated at Gnana Olivupuram, damaging the glass panes and a board displaying "Etho Unn Thaai" "(Here is your Mother)".

However, the statue of Virgin Mary was not damaged, the sources added.

Tense moments prevailed at "Gnana Olivupuram" after the news spread like wildfire, as a large number of minority community people assembled before the place of worship.

On a complaint from Rev Fr Jerome Yeronimus, the Karimedu police have registered a case and are investigating. Police protection was given to the place of worship, on the request from the authorities.

Meanwhile, policemen were deployed in the important places of worship to prevent any untoward incidents.
