Kanpur, Sep 24 (UNI) President Pratibha Devisingh Patil today stressed on the need to make Indian women economically self-sufficient.
The President was in the industrial city on the occasion of the platinum jubilee celebration of the Merchants Chamber of Uttar Pradesh.
Addressing people at the Lajpat Bhawan, she said specific efforts should be made to encourage women to become economically self-sufficient.
The President said ''some of the leading entrepreneurs in the world as well as in our country are Indian women.'' Efforts to enhance agricultural productivity and tap the potential available in agro-based industry should be done, Mrs Patil noted.
Besides, the nation should achieve food security and improved rural conditions.
The agriculture was the backbone of the economy as 70 per cent of the population was dependent on it, Mrs Patil noted.
Therefore, the agricultural production should be increased, agro-industries should be opened up in districts and agricultural training schools should be set-up.
She asked upon the Merchant Chamber to look at the practical ways to forge and intensify its interaction with farmers and the rural community to work out for win-win options.
Union Minister of State for Home Shriprakash Jaiswal and UP Health Minister Anant Kumar also addressed the function.
Tight security arrangements were made for the Preisdent's visit in the city.
Most of the schools, shops and other establishments were also closed due to security reasons.
After delivering her speech, Mrs Patil went to circuit house where she met some delegates and her relatives.
