Sushil eyeing gold in London Olympics

{image-sushil kumar_23092008.jpg news.oneindia.in}Chennai, Sep 23: Olympics bronze medallist and ace grappler Sushil Kumar today said he wants to ''win gold in the 2010 Commonwealth Games at New Delhi and carry forward the success in 2012 London Olympics''.

Interacting with students at a felicitation function organised by the Velammal Matriculation Higher Secondary School and the Tamil Nadu Athletics Association (TNAA) in recognition of his bronze winning effort at Beijing last month, he said his dream was to win an Olympics gold. ''I have started my preparations towards achieving that goal and win a gold for my country,'' he said, amid thunderous applause from the packed gathering of students at the school premises.

''But my immediate target is to win the gold in the Commonwealth Games to be held at New Delhi in 2010. It will spur me to go for the gold in London Olympics,'' he said.

Sushil Kumar became the second wrestler to win an Olympic medal after K D Jadhav, who won the bronze in the 1952 Helsinki Games.

Stating his mantra for success and the bronze winning effort in Beijing was nothing but hardwork, he said ''hard work and perseverance will definitely yield good results.

''It's sheer hard work that I managed to win a medal in Olympics,'' he said and added he took to Wrestling at a young age, inspired by his father, also a former Wrestler.

He also exhorted the students of Velammal to work hard and dream of winning an Olympic medal and advised them not to go behind cricket, which was getting all attention in the media.

''Importance should be given to other sports like Wrestling also,'' he said.

Sushil got a pat on his back from his Guru and Coach Yashvir singh who had been training him right from the age of 11.

The coach listed out the several medals won by Sushil at various national and international meets.

Former Olympian V Baskaran, TNAA president W I Davaram, Chennai District Athletics Association president R Arumugam, IPS and Velammal Educational Trust CEO and Chairman M V M Velmurugan offered their felicitations to the Wrestler and wished him good luck for his future endeavours.

Earlier, Velammal Group Founder and Chairman M V Muthuramalingam presented a cheque of Rs five lakh to Sushil Kumar.
