Kolkata, Sep 23 (UNI) A day after two security guards of Tata Motors' small car unit were attacked at Singur, the ruling Left Front today appealed to the West Bengal Government to maintain law and order and take steps for resumption of work at the Nano project.
Front Chairman Biman Basu also charged the Trinamool Congress with trying to foil the project and urged the people to frustrate the 'conspiracy'.
''The Left Front requests the State Government to initiate necessary steps for resuming work at the Tatas' small car project by maintaining law and order and keeping peace in Singur and elsewhere, '' he said.
Mr Basu alleged that even though the Trinamool Congress was claiming that its movement was peaceful, the disruption of work in the project in the recent past and the attack on securitymen last night ''clearly proves that the Opposition parties do not want the state's development nor do they want increase in the employment opportunity through industrialisation''.
He said the Tatas had announced suspension of work after supporters of the Trinamool Congress and its associate outfits waylaid the technicians and employees of the project and intimidated them. The company had declared that work would resume once peace was restored.
''Under this circustances, the objective of entering the project site in the night and assaulting the security guards was to stop the project and terrorise the Singur people, '' the statement alleged.
Mr Basu said, while the State Government announced the latest package for the Singur farmers, protecting their interests, the Trinamool Congress refused to accept it and stuck to its 'illogical' demand.
'' Their purpose is to foil the move to set up the factory, '' he alleged.
'' The Left Front appeals to the people of the state to unitedly voice protest against this conspiracy of the Trinamool Congress, which is against the interest of the state. The people of Singur will have to decide whether the Tatas' project will be set up there, '' Mr Basu said.
Last night, unidentified miscreants attacked two security guards with iron rods and sharp weapons leaving them seriously injured. Both of them had been admitted to hospital.
