Tiruchirapalli, Sep 22: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M Karunanidhi was honoured with the Periyar Award in recognition of his contribution to public service spanning more than 70 years.
The award was given away at a function to mark the Mupprum Vizha celebrations here on Sunday, Sep 21. DMK General Secretary M Anbazhagan, who read the citation, traced the life history of Mr Karunanidhi and recalled his contribution to politics, literature and social life. Party Deputy General Secretary and State Local Administration Minister M K Stalin was honoured with the Kalaignar Award while Treasurer and State Electricity Minister Arcot N Veeraswami was given the Anna Award.
DMK Principal Secretary and State PWD Minister Durai Murugan was given the Bharathidasan Award. Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram, Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation G K Vasan, TNCC President K V Thankgabalu, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi leader Thol Thirumavalavan, Indian Union Muslim League leader Khader Mohideen, MP and Dravida Kazhagam Leader K Veeramani were among those present.
